A slave trade as large as the one in Africa flourished for many centuries in the Crimea. Specialising in women and children, it developed a sophisticated system for pricing captives according to their physical attractiveness. Most valuable of all were Finnish children – “white skin, white hair” – brought south by special slaving expeditions.
